Gwydion's Portfolio

Finally, this is one of the reasons I got into 3d Printing in the first place. A design I could concieve of, but lacked the skills to make any other way: A Triple Word Tower. I’m really pleased with the way it turned out, even if it was a bit of a pain to photograph in a way that shows off all 3 words. (Etsy lacks the ability to show animated gifs, but I plan to make one to show off here and on Facebook)  I’m hoping this will be the first of a series- if you have any suggestion for triple word groupings or want to get 3 names sculpted together, please let me know! In the meantime, here’s the new listing! https://www.etsy.com/listing/577536638/live-laugh-love-sculpture?ref=shop_home_active_1

Here we go… this project is actually one of the reasons I got a 3d printer in the first place. based on my word tower design, I had the idea to make a triple-word version, with a hexagonal profile instead of a square. I’d been tinkering with the concept for years, and finally got a proof of concept out of paper. Taking that to the next level, I took my 3 nephew’s names: Henning, Connor, and Elijah, and put the concept to the test.

IT’S ALIVE!!!

It could use a little bit of refining, in that with the way some of the letters cut out, bits of detail are missing. But I have an idea for a blockier custom font that I think will fix it.

New word tower! This was a custom job for a friend, and allowed me to practice with words of unequal length. While I like the balance and aesthetics when the letters line up, the asbstract shapes created in one like this are pretty interesting too!...

Finally something new! Had a request for a lifesize origami crow through my Etsy store, thought it was an interesting challenge! Realistically, crows have about a 4 ft wingspan, but the largest paper I could find only gave mine about a 20" stretch. Still, large enough to be believable, I think!

And a few more of these… just to make them all match!

Animated Word Towers

One of the things I don’t like about Etsy is the inability to use animated gif files. Some of the things I make showcase so much better with a little motion!

Here’s a fun one… I came up with this design while not paying attention in Art History class around 1995. It’s a 3-D tangram puzzle, with each face having the traditional 7 tangram pieces showing. I wanted to see if I could extrude the idea into a 3-d sculpture puzzle, like the magnetic “nutz” desk toys you used to see, Turns out it’s a lot more complex than I’d thought! There’s a complicated system of rules I made on how to divide up the pieces, and there were 2 variations  I made out of card stock. this was the first, grouping the large triangles in opposite corners and subdividing the rest into 27 pieces.  I hope to get back to this one day, maybe with some 3-d printing.
